Central Advances to Semi Finals on McHughs 2 goals

In East Corinth this afternoon, Washington Academy Running Raiders battled Central Red Devils in Eastern Maine class C girl’s soccer play off action. Temperatures hovering around 40 degrees, the large crowd of fans settled in watching the game. Central Freshman Mackenzi McHugh emerged as the star of the game, scoring two goals to send the Red Devils to the semi finals, defeating Washington Academy 2-1.

The action in the first half went back and forth as the teams explored each other. Running Raider goalie Jessie Hardy made the games first save on a corner kick that she caught at the far corner. Andi Flannery had a shot on against Central’s goalie Samantha Brownell that went wide left. On a direct kick, Katie Day of Central sent her shot wide right. Michelle Ferrie of the Red Devils had a shot that Hardy deflected away. The defense of Washington Academy was frequently tested. Kelly Sawyer and Christy Smith anchored the defense and were able to get their foot on the ball many times to clear the ball to their offense. A chip pass over the defense of Washington Academy by Ferrie, found freshman Mackenzi McHugh who promptly fired it past Hardy, scoring the games first goal, with 17.51 remaining in the first half. The Running Warriors offense led by Flannery tried to press for opportunities using passing up the wings, and some strong dribbling skills in the middle. Flannery was joined by her teammates, Brandelyn Hodgdon, Sierra Moore, Krysten Fabri, and Breanna Nicely trying to find a gap in the Red Devil Defense. The Red Devil Defense led by Senior Katie Day, Brianna Speed, Jessica Plante and Taylor Clark was able to beat the Running Raiders to the loose ball, turning away Washington Academy’s opportunities. Washington Academy kept pushing and Flannery had a shot that went wide left. Headed the other way, McHugh had a shot also wide left. Goalie Samantha Brownell maintained the Red Devil lead with a series of spectacular saves after being peppered with 3 shots when the ball couldn’t be cleared out of the penalty area. Running Raider goalie also helped her team by making a sliding save with her foot, to keep the Red Devils from scoring again.
In the second half Central’s offense started to control the ball more, showing more patience with their passes, both short and long passes. Jocelyn Portmann, Ferrie, McHugh and Hannah Pray worked their passes through mid field. Their advances met by Washington Academy’s Kelly Sawyer. Scarlett Stevens broke up quite a few advances by Washington Academy as she helped to defend Central’s goal. Brandelyn Hodgdon of the Running Raiders, had a break away, and goalie Brownell came out. Brownell ended up with a great save taking the ball away from Hodgdon to avoid a possible goal. With 25.47 left in the second half, a direct kick awarded to Central just out side of the penalty box and to the right. The Raiders set up a wall. McHugh took the kick, shot it over the wall, and hit the post of the goal on the left side deflecting quickly into the goal for the games second goal. A few minutes later, a ball that was headed in by Flannery, found three other raiders in front of Brownell, and the bouncing ball fired in by Brianna Nicely to score Washington Academy’s only goal. The Running Raiders pressed as the game closed to an end, and the Central Red Devils turned away their last drive. Central wins 2-1 over Washington Academy and now advances to the quarter final round. They await the results of Foxcroft Academy’s game in Fort Kent to determine where they go. Fort Kent win’s the Red Devils have the long road trip. If Foxcroft Academy wins, then Central would get the home field advantage. Unofficially, Brownell made 7 saves and Hardy made 21 saves.
