Girls soccer 10/27, Eastern B quarterfinal Winslow 4 - MDI 2

This cool and cloudy afternoon in Winslow was the setting for a class B girls quarterfinal soccer game. The lady Trojans of MDI came to Winslow to play soccer and lost 4-2. With the win Winslow moves on the host a semi-final game against Old Town which should be played on Halloween Saturday October 31st.

In the first half it appeared that MDI was playing to prevent Winslow scoring a goal and not putting much effort into developing an offense. MDI's goal keeper played a very aggressive style of goal coming off her line numerous times in successful efforts at stopping Winslow from scoring. Winslow must have had about 5-6 chances where the ball just missed the net. Finally at the 3:51 mark of the first half Winslow broke a scoreless tie. Freshman Alliyah Veilleux scored a goal, with an assist from senior Kim Curtis. Curtis had placed the ball right in front of the net, and eventually Veilleux found the ball and tapped it into the net. This was the only goal in the first half.

In the second half Winslow jumped out to a 2-0 lead, when senior Jordyn Mallett scored off a very nice pass from Kim Curtis at the 35:10 mark. Winslow extend the lead to 3-0 when Veilleux had her second goal of the game off a corner kick from Curtis. This took place at the 20:03 mark. Winslow's final goal came with 12:35 left in the game as Kim Curtis scored off a nice pass from Alexa Lane.

Apparently believing that a 4-0 lead with 12 minutes to go was enough for a win, the Winslow coach started making changes to allow additional players some time on the field. The starting goalie was pulled and a number of starting field players were removed. This strategy almost came back to bite Winslow in the butt. With 10:11 left in the game Winslow was called for a foul in the box off a MDI corner kick (I believe there was a hand ball on a Winslow player, but I am not sure). Number 25 for MDI took a penalty kick and scored to cut the lead to 4-1.

With 6:09 left in the game MDI cut the lead to 4-2 as number 7 from MDI scored off a break away as a nice pass behind the Winslow defense gave her an opportunity to take a shot with no one between her and the goalie. A beautiful shot beat the Winslow keeper. However that marked the end of the scoring.
