Fairfield- Lawrence got the great pitching they expect this season and easily rolled over the Mt. Blue Cougars 9-1 in their home opener at Keyes Field Friday afternoon. Senior Blair Blaisdell pitched a complete game and strike out 12 to earn the win.
Lawrence bats struck for five runs in the third inning. A lead off single by Nick Champney followed by a walk to Jake Doolan and a bunt single by Xaviere Scott loaded the bases with no outs. Alex Leathers laid down a bunt and put Lawrence on the board. Blaisdell stroked a single and made it 3-0 Lawrence. Mike Capponi's double plated two and after three innings Lawrence was up 5-0.
Mt. Blue(0-1) could do little against Blaisdell, who stuck out five of the first seven batters he faced. Blaisdell went the distance for the Bulldogs (1-1) throwing 109 pitches. The Cougars got their only run of the game in the sixth inning. Cam Abbott doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Blaisdell's second wild pitch of the inning.
The Bulldogs added three runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a an RBI bunt single by Alex Leathers who was 3-4 with a stolen base and 2 runs scored. Lawrence tacked on a run in the sixth inning with a 2 walks, a single a sacrifice and an error.
