Friday night in Lincoln, the FA football team ended the regular season the same way it started--with a dominant defensive performance on the road. Alex Stevens (14 tackles and an interception) anchored a unit that forced six turnovers and held the Mattanawcook Lynx to just 86 yards of total offense. Meanwhile Donnie Boyer (14 carries for 110 yards and two scores) and Zac Smith (7 carries for 103 yards and two touchdown) highlighted a punishing ground attack that piled up 332 rushing yards en route to the 27-0 victory.
The Ponies’ suffocating team defense held the Lynx to 58 rushing yards on 31 carries while quarterbacks Trystan Pelkey and Cody McDonald combined to complete just 3 of 21 passes for 43 yards. Hurricane Lou Lafache (8 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble) and Brent Thomas (6 tackles and his team-leading fourth sack) highlighted an interior defensive line that dominated the line of scrimmage. Freshman Pete Boyer, receiving his most extensive playing time of the year at outside linebacker, came up with two of the Ponies’ five interceptions. Hunter Law (third of the year), Chris Shorey, and Stevens had the others for a unit that has now picked off opposing quarterbacks 15 times (compared to just three interceptions thrown by Shorey). Cody Coiley (7 tackles and a fumble recovery) and Wes Stinson (7 tackles) joined Stevens, Shorey, and Boyer in a linebacking corps that controlled the middle of the field and picked off Pelkey four times. The linebacking trio of Stevens (85), Coiley (57), and Stinson (47) finish the regular season as the team’s three leading tacklers.
