Central coach Diane Rollins had McHugh guarding the explosive Sigi Koizar. She limited Koizar to 10 field goal attempts in the Red Devils 42-41 overtime victory over the Minutemen.

"I was thinking I would just throw this at them and see if we could do it. It was 5 o'clock. We worked through it for a half hour," Rollins said. "The low, the help, do this and do that. Tonight we went through how we were going to defend Sigi (Koizar). That is it. Johnson made a free throw with 5.8 seconds left in the second overtime to send the Lee Academy Pandas to a 51-50 double overtime victory in a class C boys semi-final victory played on Friday afternoon.

The free throw was the only point scored in the second overtime as Johnson stood near half court with the ball for the majority of both overtimes.

Johnson and Boubacar Diallo each had four fouls for the Pandas and Lee coach Randy Harris did not want to risk one or both of them fouling out.

Penquis coach Tony Hamlin was content on playing a 30 second game against the high powered Pandas. Hamlin and the Patriots played some zone in a 58-54 victory over Lee in the regular season finale.

"They (Lee) have players at every position. They are a good team, they are good basketball players," Hamlin said. "We zoned them over there. They didn't like it. I was comfortable just letting them stand at half court. You rather play them in a 30 second game than a four minute game."

Trevor Lyford put the Patriots ahead 23-22 with three minutes left in the second quarter. Lyford and Isaiah Bess combined for all of the Patriots 23 points. Harris decided on a triangle two against Bess and Lyford.

The Pandas followed that up with a 15-0 run that lasted until midway through the third quarter. Penquis followed that up with a 14-0 run to tie the game at 37. Bess and Lyford combined for 41 of the 50 points for Penquis. Both are sophomores and that gives the Patriots plenty of optimism.

Hamlin said, "We are young. I started four underclassmen. . We will be back here. We will learn from this experience."

Lyford hit a three pointer to give the Patriots a 40-39 with 6:37 remaining in the fourth quarter. That plan was to try and do everything they could to make anyone other than Parise Rossignol beat them.

What ended up happening was, not only did the other Crusaders come through but so did Rossignol. She put in 33 points on 10-15 shooting. Her first three shots were three point attempts, she made them all.

Shead coach Sarah Moore had at least two of her Tigers on Rossignol for most of the game. When you have the court awareness that Rossignol has, that just means you are picking you are picking your poison.

Rossignol dished out nine assists, including many to Ashley Wilson who finished with 16 points on 8-12 points, including 10 points in the second quarter.

Matt Rossignol is the dad and coach of Parise. Matt currently holds class B tourney records. Matt hit 17 field goals in one game and 37 in the 1985 regional tournament. Parise is also in the record book for her 44 point performance in a prelim victory over Jonesport-Beals.

Matt knows that if the opposing team puts two people on Parise, others need to step up. Wilson and others stepped for the Crusaders in the quarterfinal victory.

"Every night she (Parise) sees two defenders or at least a box and one. They (Shead) decided to go with two on her. What that means is our other girls are going to need to step up. Tonight they did," Coach Rossignol said. "(Ashley) Wilson had 10 points in the second quarter. (Felisha) Bouchard hit the open shot. Even the girls who do not typically score for me were scoring. When we have that going on, you need to pick your poison. If you want to double her (Parise), she will find them."

Parise also pulled down eight rebounds, blocked three shots and had two steals. Rossignol, Wilson and Felisha Bouchard combined to shoot 21-32 (65.6) from the field. The Crusaders shot 27-44 (61.3) as a team. Van Buren had 15 assists on their 27 field goals.

Bouchard finished with nine points, three rebounds and three assists. Wilson recorded four rebounds and two steals. Natashia Bourgoin recorded six points and four rebounds. Van Buren (17-3) will face Washburn in a semi-final game on Thursday, February 23rd at 8:35 PM.

Van Buren and Washburn played two games in the regular season and each team won on their home court. Washburn won 52-37 on December 16th. Van Buren won 66-56 on January 13th. Rossignol had 33 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in the Crusaders victory over Washburn.

"Washburn is so athletic, they are so quick. If you turn it over, it leads to instant offense with them," Coach Rossignol said. "When we beat them at home, we were able to take care of the ball. That is why we were able to win. I expect he (Washburn coach Michael Carolos) will have a different game plan."

Jenna Demolet led the Tigers with 16 points and eight rebounds. Vanessa Patterson chipped in with 12 points. five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Shead finishes the season with a 13-7 record.

Boys basaketball class D quarterfinal- Jonesport-Beals 57 Easton 42

Bangor, Me--- The Jonesport-Beals Royals went on a 9-0 run to start the third quarter and cruised to a 57-42 victory over the Easton Beats in a class D boys quarterfinal game played on Monday afternoon.

Vinal Crowley led the Royals with 14 points, nine rebounds, six blocks and three steals. Hodgdon finishes the season with a 14-6 record.

Things to watch at the Auditorium

Bangor, Me--- The Class B, C and D tournament begins Friday night at the Bangor Auditorium. As always you will see great games, great individual performances and a electric atmosphere. Here are some other things to look for in the great week ahead.

Everyone would be shocked if anyone other than Presque Isle and Nokomis were playing for the Eastern Maine class B girls championship at 2 PM on February 25th. Camden Hills could give Nokomis a close game if they end up meeting in a semi-final game. The Warriors defeated Camden Hills 62-51 in the regular season.

Presque Isle will face John Bapst in a quarterfinal game on Saturday. If they get by that match-up they will go up against the Gardiner/MDI winner in the semi-finals. Gardiner has proving that they can play with the top teams in class B. They played close games with both Nokomis and Western Maine power, Leavitt.

The quarterfinal game to watch in class B girls will be the 4/5 match-up between Gardiner and MDI. That game is schedule for 1:30 PM on Saturday, February 18th. Presque/Isle and Gardiner could be an interesting semi-final game while a Nokomis and Presque Isle final is what everyone is looking forward to.

The Class B boys tip off on Friday night with the third seeded Gardiner Tigers facing the sixth seeded Nokomis Warriors. MDI comes in as the favorite with a 18-0 record. The reward if a quarterfinal matchup with defending state champion Camden Hills.

The Class C girls tourney could be the most wide open. Orono comes in as the top seed. They will have their hands full in a quarterfinal game against Houlton on Tuesday, February 21st @ 330 PM.

Stearns is very dangerous. They have the best player in the class C girls tourney and maybe in the entire tournament in Sigi Koizar. Stearns has a balanced overall team that will be a tough match-up for any team.. The Minutemen have a tough semi-final game against Mattanawcook. If they can get by the Lynx, it could set up a semi-final showdown with Orono.

The most interesting quarterfinal game could be between third ranked Central and sixth seeded Bucksport. The two teams split during the regular season. Bucksport won a 37-35 game at Central late in the season. That helped the Bucks earn the sixth seed. All this talk about balance in class C girls and the only undefeated team has not even been mentioned yet. Calais comes in at 16-0 and will look to go deep into the tourney after falling in the quarterfinals as a top seed last year.

Lee and Sumner come in at 16-2 and the top two seeds for class C boys. Penquis also comes in at 16-2. With the dynamic sophomore duo of Isaiah Bess and Trevor Lyford, the Patriots will be a tough matchup for anyone. They defeated Lee late in the season to earn the number four seed.

Calais comes into the tourney at 14-2 and will face Mattanawcook in a interesting quarterfinal game. The class C boys semi-final games on Friday, February 24th will be must see at the Bangor Auditorium.

A lower seed will be making the class D girls semi-finals. The reason that is a guarantee is because Southern Aroostook upset Fort Fairfield in a prelim game. That sets up a quarterfinal matchup of number 15 Southern Aroostok against number seven Hodgdon.

Washburn comes in as the number one seed. If Van Buren can get by Shead in the quarterfinals it will set up a must see semi-final game betwen the Crusaders and Washburn. Parise Rossignol of Van Buren is the player to watch in class D. She scored her 1000 career point this season, faster than anyone in the history of Maine high school basketball. Central Aroostook and Woodland will be a interesting quarterfinal game.

Jonesport-Beals, Central Aroostook and Washburn are the powerhouse teams in class D boys. Garet Beal of Jonesport-Beals, Mitch Worcester of Washburn and Jordan McLaughlin of Washburn will provide offensive explosion that is rarely seen.

Boys class B prelim- Nokomis 50 Waterville 49- OT

Ethan Pearl scored 19 points to lead the Nokomis Warriors to a 50-49 victory over the Waterville Panthers. Pearl shot only 4-9 from the line. Pearl was given the final opportunity when J.P. Michaud fouled him 48 feet from the basket with the game tied. Pearl missed the first. He sank the second just like he was on the green on the 18th hole.

"I just kept telling myself, it is like a putt on the 18 for the win," Pearl said. On Saturday afternoon it will be his Dexter cheerleading teammates that will be putting that smile on McKusick's face.

McKusick was a huge part in Dexter claiming the Eastern Maine regional championship on January 28th. Four days later the cheerleaders were shocked on the sidelines during a Dexter girls basketball game against Orono.

The cheering squad found out that day that McKusick was at the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor getting treated for an infection in his heart.

"It started out pretty solemn. The night they figured out he would not be returning to the team, we didn't even cheer that night. They just didn't feel like they were going to make it through," Dexter coach Kacie Ladd said. "The next day they realized, they have to make it through. That is what David would want. That is what they want to do for David. They want to show David they can make it through. That first night was very tough."

Click here for the full article

Slideshow

Girls basketball- Dexter 51 Foxcroft 33

Jordyn Bell (5) led Dexter with 14 points and 11 rebounds in 51-33 victory over Foxcroft on Thursday evening.
